Response: I need a personal assistant, a full time housekeeper, a personal chef, a physical therapist and trainer, a makeup artist, a full time animal walker, my own editor - no, my own publishing company, a creative team, a full time organizing committee, a fleet of dragon boats and kayaks, my very own Orchestra, a professional seamstress, a new wardrobe, a few million bucks, and a private jet....

...............but I'll settle for a kind word and a hug.

When someone is going through trouble and you feel as though there is nothing you can really do except offer to do something.
There is something you can do. You can show them love.

That old adage still rings true - ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE; LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED.

-John Walton said this to his oldest son in 1937 during the depression as he walked away with his rifle in hand to bring home dinner to his family of eleven.

I don't believe living should be complicated. Life should be lived as simply as expressed in the words of John Walton. Somehow, we manage to complicate our lives with all of our insecurities and ignorance's. I believe our Heavenly Father would agree with John Walton. I believe He has told us through all He has brought us through and all He has blessed us with that as simple as it sounds, we are to be bold enough to live simple.

So, take a nap, eat PB&J, stroll through the woods, turn off the radio and whistle your favorite tune, drive through the country, feed the pigeons, brush your hair one-hundred times, sit on the ground....
but whatever you do,

Live simply!

The lady on the Doctor Oz Show who shared her testimony of healing from stage 4 breast cancer was so on target! You have to surround yourself with people who will stand in belief with you and create that atmosphere of expectancy! In 2003, when I was told I had another stage 4 cancer, my church family, High Praises Church, stood on the Word of God with me and covered me in prayer. In 2004, the doctors handed me a report that stated "Healed" and I was cancer free. I don't understand what the season we spent away from High Praises Church was all about except that we did learn a very important lesson that perhaps we would not have learned if we had not actually walked it out. I don't believe it was simply misfortune that I would come to yet another battle with the breast cancer when I left High Praises Church. Once that covering.. that umbrella of hope and belief was no longer present, the enemy saw opportunity. Then while I was back in treatment and lost my hair, I bought into the lie from the enemy that if I returned to High Praises Church with a bald head and obviously back in treatment, people would lose faith because they had watched God work that miracle in my body and they looked on as I stood on the platform with my fellow choir members and Pastor Chris and testified that I was healed and would live and not die and proclaim the promises of God. I cannot express in words how thankful I am to be back at High Praises Church. This past Sunday, the church honored our music minister with beautifully spoken and truthful words about him and his amazing wife. Danny and Wanda Knight are the real deal. Both times I was admitted to the hospital this year, I knew sometime during the day to expect Danny. I'm not one who believes our pastors should be on a leash or holding our hands to cross the spiritual street and I don't need them to feed me... I study the word, spend time in my prayer closet, and pray..I nourish myself which is how I learned God's will concerning healing. God directed our path back to High Praises, the only church I had ever been a member of, a charter member at that... the church where I was saved and Baptized with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. I know the prayers of the righteous heal the sick as I've lived it and I am a walking testimony that by His stripes, we were healed. Praise God for my church...a church open to the Holy Spirit, who would never intentionally grieve Him...where the anointing flows. I'm thankful for a church where there is freedom of worship and where the Spiritual Gifts are free to operate. I'm thankful for a pastor who brings me Chic-Fil-A to the hospital because the food is more of a threat than the illness and then sits bedside with an open transparent heart. Pastors today are more "rock star" than pastor...not intending to be rude but we all have a devil to fight and there's no time for games. People are 'ankle deep in belief' because pastors are ankle deep . Life is hard and the enemy is seeking who he may devour. My heart grows more and more with concern that pastors are so wrapped up in proclaiming man's imperfection that there's no teaching on seeking righteousness. I know I'm far from perfection but I also know the more I seek Him, the more I find Him and He is perfect. Jesus declared it was finished from the cross and that included sickness. He wants us to have everything He accomplished for us and I will not let that go in vain. I am healed!

ANDERSON — Caleb Suttles has always had a lot to say.

These days, the 18-year-old Clemson University freshman works at the on-campus television station, CTV, and the university’s video production department. But before he was a college student, he was still working with a camera.

He’s liked photography since he was in elementary school.

“At my grandfather’s house, I’d always get him to pull out his VHS and we’d record stuff,” Suttles said. “I would sit there in front of his video camera, and I would talk about anything. That’s just something I never outgrew.”

It’s that passion, the desire to say something important, that pushed him to create the documentary film, “Pre-Do: Foresight in 20/20.”

It’s a two-hour film where he interviewed 50 local people — in nursing homes, law offices and at local charities — and asked them about what regrets they had in life.

Only some of those 50 interviews are captured on the film. But some of the people he’s featured on the film include former 10th Circuit Solicitor George Ducworth; Kelly Jo Barnwell, the director of the Jo Brown Senior Center in Anderson; and Anderson University Economics Professor Miren Ivankovic.

The purpose of the film, Suttles said, was to learn now, what others have learned later in life.

“This was an idea I had in the 10th grade,” he said. “I thought about it after I kept hearing a lot of adults say that they wish they knew then what they know now. I want to know now what I’ll need to know in the future.”

The film became a project that he took on his senior year at the Montessori School in Anderson.

He started interviewing people in August 2010 and finished in August 2011. He showed the film in a premier at the school. On Dec. 3, the film will be presented for its first public screening at the Mellow Mushroom in downtown Anderson.

Already, people have found the film through his website and on YouTube.

Andrew Hammett, a 28-year-old Anderson resident, is one of those who’ve already watched the film after hearing about it through a friend. After watching it, he contacted Suttles and told him he would like to help him promote the work so that more could see it in the community.

Hammett sent out press releases to the local media and helped Suttles schedule the public screening of the film.

“I was pretty impressed with the work, especially with the effort it took,” Hammett said. “I really enjoyed how it evolved. I thought it tied nicely with the theme that things aren’t looking great for people younger than 30. Maybe we need to think about that sort of stuff.”

It certainly has made Suttles think.

He interviewed people who’d given up on their dreams, the dreams they had as children, to fight in wars, to raise children or because their dreams weren’t accepted by others. Some had found happiness in new goals, but others were left with a sense of regret.

One man he interviewed wanted to be an interior designer, but was discouraged from that career because it wasn’t socially acceptable for a man to work in the field at the time.

“It was amazing to see how willing people were to tell their stories,” Suttles said. “What I learned is that most of us never outgrow what our interests were when we were young. You have to hold fast to that. I think a lot of people let go of it.”

So he intends to do just that.

He said he’s always pondered life’s big questions, something that might be a result of growing up in hospital rooms as his mother, Angie Suttles, battled cancer. He was then encouraged by his teachers at the Montessori School of Anderson to continue asking those questions.

And he is determined to ponder those questions in film as a documentary film maker. He’s already thinking about studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., and he’s working a new, shorter film.

In his dorm room at Clemson University, he has a mini-studio set up. He has a desktop computer, with a video camera and a tripod. And at his parents’ house in Anderson, he has one wall painted as a green screen — a bright green background that those in film and television use as a backdrop.

“Life is short,” he said. “I enjoy seeking the truth in life and what life can be.”

My son and I participated by submitting our 'Life in a Day' clips - he with friends in Florida and me in Chattanooga, Tn for the National Dragon Boat Ladies Club Crew Division Race. Thousands of clips were submitted and though ours were not included in those among the final cut, we were excited to have taken part. It's a beautiful work of art with mankind as the subject and it is sure to open your heart to your fellow man. A Prophetic Dream?

Rough night with tummy issues and night sweats as chemo is now flushing from my system. More trouble with the Lymph edema in the leg but I am calling on Him (my God) and confident that this too shall pass from me.

I felt a pressing to share this experience which I believe to have been prophetic.

I dreamed I was frantically attempting to keep babies from falling from a cliff by sliding through the wide guard railing that lined the top of this cliff. I was pleading for help from people who were walking around me, only to be ignored. Suddenly, there were planes and helicopters circling above us (and now the son had appeared, as well as a man whose face I couldn't make out), when one of the helicopters crashes. I told the son to watch the babies (which had began to multiply) while I ran to the crash scene (now on fire) where all the passengers had perished. I began to weep uncontrollably when a drill sergeant began screaming at me to "dry it up, they got what they deserved." He said I shouldn't care what happens to others and I would be better off if I would just mind my own business. I looked around and all the people who had been walking around us refusing to help us with the babies, began to die 'one by one.'

This is when I woke up and found myself crying uncontrollably. The first thing I thought was that it was 3AM, so I grabbed my cell phone to see the time and it was 3AM. I began walking through my house praying as I felt that the dream was spiritual. I prayed for my personal relationship with Him and my family. I prayed for the repentance of this world.

I know sometimes our dream is a result of stress or eating something that may have not agreed with us but I also know dreams were important to God. God used dreams on many occasions to speak to people and reveal a truth. I believe this was dreams concerning the hearts of man.

We have to return to our knees!

"It Is Finished!" - Jesus Christ

But how had the redemptive plan been completed and our justification complete when He was not yet dead, He had not yet been buried nor had He risen from the grave yet?

"And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain ... And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins." —1 Corinthians 15:13-17

"Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification." —Romans 4:25

How when He had not yet been to the mercy seat where the blood of the Lamb was to be applied?

"Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but BY HIS OWN BLOOD he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us." —Hebrews 9:12

John 19:28 "After this, Jesus knowing all things were accomplished, that the
scriptures might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst."

Why did Jesus tell Mary not to touch Him because He needed to ascend to His Father to sprinkle His blood upon the mercy seat to finish His work of redemption?

"Jesus entered into the Holy Place in Heaven by His own blood. The work of atonement was not complete until He had applied His own blood to the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Hollies.
-Hebrews 9:12

Jesus was the precious 'Lamb' of God. He was the Lamb without spot and without blemish who cried out, "It is finished" as He hung between such a conflict that the earth shook and the sun refused to shine.
A battle raged between evil and the angels of glory while Jesus, the divine divide, hung between the conflict and peace that shook the foundations of this world.
Jesus was fulfilling the Abrahamic covenant; creating for us a better promise.
He was creating a beginning from an ending.
It was what would be an ending of all conflict, conflict that had raged down through the ages of all man. Jesus, the strong tower now erected; the secret place created; the ever present help birthed out of the fold of all past and future pains of the sins of generations of men where we can so easily now take our place.
Full access to our own creator.
Why then do we continue to hold ourselves prisoners of conflict, chaos, and confusion? We allow useless, fruitless battles to continue to rage in our lives and hold us captive.

We have to know "It Is Finished" means the battle is over for us if we would only believe.
The King of all the Ages, Jesus, has fought all battles and all conflicts of all ages and because He has done so, we are free!
Jesus cried, "It is finished!"- meaning: All confusion, guilt, fear, condemnation, unrest, mental unrest, sickness, pain, hopelessness, loneliness, brokenness, .......it's all over!
He finished it and then completed your redemption by His death, burial and rising again -
Why live in captivity? Why fight a battle that is over?

During the first cancer, I was a prisoner of it all and thought the fight was mine but when the second cancer came along, He taught me that He had finished that fight. Now, I understand that the battle belongs to the Lord...and when I forget, He quickly reminds me. When I draw my sword, I hear Him call my name and He tells me to put it away. When I feel like the sea will soon swallow me up, I see His face and He reaches His hands down to me. He has never failed me and I know He never will. There's not a cancer that will ever cause me to walk in fear because I know that no weapon formed against me will ever be allowed to prosper itself over me.

My life begins daily because He, who is life, finished the fight through the cross.
He completed my redemption and justification by His death, burial and resurrection.

It is finished and I am free indeed!

Speechless! Thank you for sharing! How beautiful. Immediate breaking in a glorious way....how amazing is the anointing on this music..."take our place at the table" - wow! I don't understand why satan would give up the best job in heaven, do you? - Worship Leader? How incredible it must of been to lead worship before our Holy God. Thank you, my friend. Since I was a small child, music is all I've ever known but satan robbed me of those talents when I turned to the rock scene at a young age. My testimony doesn't start at cancers at 31 but at 14 with abuse. But God has always used music to move my heart towards Him and has more than many occasion used lyrics and notes to put me on my face before Him...to call me to His Glory. I want to sing to my Lord again in an honest and pure way in which He created me to do...in truth. It took me so many years to understand that the roots of my testimony grow much deeper and much further than I've even allowed myself to speak. God has spent the past couple of years asking me to release these chains..to finely be free of the hurts that has held me back from stepping into His Favor and Purpose. I know that one click, one blog, one post and the story is out but this season will not be like the last as my will, my intention is to honor my Father and what it is He has brought me out of..."One Step Away" - my chest is caving in and I can no longer breathe as this aroma has filled the atmosphere of my home with His Glory.

A Gift From LiveSTRONG, The Mother Ship

Thank You, Lance Armstrong Foundation. I appreciate the gift and the sentiment and I just wanted to share a note back with my "Mother Ship."

I'll never forget standing in the park with 199 of my courageous friends on the Hill that incredibly steamy hot day in DC in 2007 with my fist up in the air wrapped in a yellow wristband shouting at the top of my voice - Livestrong, Livestrong, Livestrong, LIVESTRONG, LIVESTRONG, LIVESTRONG.......
What a day of declaration that would not be forgotten.....
I never knew it would be the beginning of my challenging cancer up close and very personal.

We know we can trust you. We know you will not give up or give in. We believe in you and this foundation. We know you are solid. We know you will always make our voice be heard.

I appreciate Lance but he said it himself - it's not about him. I believe change will come streaming through yellow.

I believe in this unity and the determination to fight back.
I believe the dedication for knowledge will save lives.
And I know that the attitudes of this courageous people will bring the end to what we all long to see - the end of cancer.

I Love The Way You Hold Me, My Friends!

I recently signed off Facebook, suspending my page for an extended time. As much as I love my awesome cancer survivor and prayer warrior friends it's simply a timing issue. What I mean is - God is taken me into a new season and for the first time, I am beginning to see (visually see) the place He is calling me to take in Him and I desire to pay my vows. In order to accomplish this, I have to clean up my work zone. I will be pouring all of myself into the book He has placed in my spirit, the ministry He has gifted me, and sharing my life's journey here on this blog - this place where I have the great opportunity to live and proclaim His goodness.
I will always stand with my breast cancer and below the belt brother and sister survivors from all over the world (survivors/friends of all cancers and life's cancers as everyone has their "cancers") as we are friends for LIFE! I appreciate the unending support and great conversations within these true friendships and I know without doubt that God has brought this worldwide community together. I hope to see all of them/you meeting me here on Angie's Blog and on my Blog, secretplaceblog.blogspot.com as we continue to move forward in healing. I hope to also see you on Twitter: @angiesuttles - as well as, various conferences in which we celebrate, rejoice and minister to one another.
Let's walk this journey together. Let's walk upright. Let's walk in the Glory of His Spirit and not under the oppression of disease. Let's walk honoring one another because we all have a devil to fight and after all, he is under our feet!!

There was a story I heard some time ago about a woman who was "devout atheist." She was in a very serious car accident where she was trapped and alone believing she was going to die. She began crying out, "GOD GOD GOD, oh my GOD," when she suddenly heard an audible voice respond: "Why are you calling on me now? I've never heard from you, my daughter." She explained upon rescue what she had experienced and how this was not an invention of her mind. She had been an unbeliever all her life as the generations before her. She gave Him nothing and in return, He offered her grace.

Why we would want to disregard the only real truth for our lives is beyond understanding or comprehension. I've battled two different stage 4 cancers over a period of twelve years and even before the cancers I was a greater danger to myself than cancer ever was. I've been through more than anyone would even dare to believe. I could have died so easily in those places I had chosen to live my life and would be separated from God for an eternity. But one day after hitting rock bottom which was my crash, I cried out "Oh my God" with nothing to offer Him and He offered me Grace. If it had not been for God, I would have perished and if I have to proclaim it with the final draw of my final breath while crawling on my belly, then I will.

We have a covenant offered freely that we don't deserve. We draw every breath from the reserves of His Mercy and His Grace that endures and is sufficient. How arrogant to think it possible to toss Him out like yesterday's History book...as if anyone really could. Jesus said, "No one takes my life but I lay it down."

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost....this is why though my body has suffered side effects from chemo the past couple of days, I can pray in tongues, my heavenly language, and my spirit finds true comfort and suddenly, I'm filled with thanksgiving! My spirit grows full with rest, my mind filled with peace and my soul full of joy! Jesus promised us the 'comforter' would come and He would fill us with the Spirit of God. We can be filled with power from on high with rivers of living water flowing from our lives that triumph over every adversity! Pray for God to fill you with His Holy Spirit....Acts 2 - It is a gift available for you...the Baptism of the Holy Ghost will change your walk with Him. There is a language, 'unknown tongues' - an unknown language that will flow from your mouth as the Holy Spirit gives you the utterance. This language is a prayer language, the language of angels, that your enemy cannot understand. We are spiritual beings and through the infilling of the Holy Spirit, we pray answers into our lives.. when we don't know what to pray, our spirits pray for us. We don't have to understand it to receive it. We don't understand how electricity works but we don't sit in the dark because we don't understand it - we turn the light switch on. When you receive Christ, you receive a measure of the Holy Spirit - but there is more! There is an infilling that will fill you to overflowing - just ask, seek and knock and you will find! People ask me how I have been able to endure what I have through all the trails I have faced in my life including the cancers and over 100 rounds of chemo. My answer: The Baptism, the infilling of the Holy Spirit - my prayer language. When I didn't know what to pray or how to pray for the situation I found myself in or maybe I was too sick to put words together..because I had received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, I would find myself praying in a language that I had never been taught. I didn't understand what I was praying but God did. *The entire new testament was written by men, men who experienced trials and tribulations like none of us have ever known, who were filled with the Holy Spirit. Yes, The Holy Spirit has been abused in "The Church" today - there's many ways to grieve the Holy Spirit - there's those who ignore the existence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the spirit language of tongues and there are those who think if they haven't shouted in tongues for everyone to hear or ran around the church pews that they really haven't had church. The Holy Spirit is a gentle giant... The Holy Spirit strengthens our walk with God. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit has been laughed at, poked fun of and rejected in many churches but I will testify that I would never have made it in my life without the infilling of the Holy Spirit and my Heavenly Prayer Language. I thank God that when this body grows weary, I can pray in the spirit, an unknown tongue, a heavenly language, and rivers of living water flood my soul and my life.

OVAC FY 2012 Budget Priorities

OVAC recognizes the importance of federal funding for cancer research, early detection and prevention programs. OVAC also supports federal funding for programs that help cancer patients navigate the health care system and ensure a well-trained and adequately staffed nursing workforce.

OVAC is calling on Congress to:

1. Support funding for the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Ongoing cancer research is on the verge of making great progress in the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer. This progress is in jeopardy absent sustained funding.

2. Support funding for the Centers for Disease Control cancer programs and keep these programs intact while other chronic diseases programs are potentially reorganized. These CDC state-based cancer programs provide vital resources for cancer surveillance, breast and cervical, and colorectal cancer screening, and awareness initiatives targeting skin, prostate, ovarian and blood cancers. Cuts in funding would reduce the number people being served by life-saving screening programs and outreach programs.

3. Support funding for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Patient Navigator Program to help cancer patients navigate the health care system and overcome barriers to access cancer care. Support funding for the HRSA Title VIII Nursing Programs.

4. Support funding for the Food and Drug Administration to further integrate cutting-edge science that will streamline the translation of cancer research from early stage discovery to clinical application.

5. Support funding for the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. This funding would support the pediatric cancer programs at NCI, CDC, and the Department of Health and Human Services.

ONE VOICE AGAINST CANCER LOBBY DAY DC 2011

I became a cancer advocate with The Lance Armstrong Foundation in 2007 when I was chosen by the foundation to travel with Lance Armstrong and 199 of my constituents, from around the country, to Washington, DC to ask Congress to make cancer a national priority. In 2008, the foundation asked me to lead a local LIVESTRONG grassroots advocacy effort and as a result, ‘Upstate SC for LIVESTRONG was formed. I served as a Track Leader for the foundation at the LIVESTRONG Summit in Columbus, Ohio in 2008 where I was able to present our local group’s advocacy and fundraising efforts with groups from around the country.

‘Upstate SC for LIVESTRONG’ has held LIVESTRONG Day events annually throughout the Upstate for “LIVESTRONG Day” and served various cancer organizations with fundraising and community events. ‘Upstate SC for LIVESTRONG’ joined efforts with the local cancer association to birth the Upstate’s first cancer survivor/supporter dragon boat support group.

May 23-24th, LIVESTRONG will join with fellow members of ‘One Voice Against Cancer’, a coalition of 38 cancer organizations, for a lobby day on Capitol Hill. I will be representing LIVESTRONG as a delegate from South Carolina where I will share my journey of surviving two different stage 4 cancers, vulva and breast, while in my 30’s as a young wife and mother.

This year, we will demonstrate the tremendous advances made in the fight against cancer thanks to recent increases in federal funding and urge Congress to build on this progress. Federal funding for research and proven screening programs should be sustained so that past progress isn’t squandered against a disease that kills an estimated 1,500 people in America each day.

Our representatives have some tough choices to make as they outline the budget for 2012, but I am certain that no one could ignore the stories of our group of survivors, caregivers, and warriors in the fight against cancer. We will convey the necessity and urgency of these requests in a way that no one else could do.

I have to agree with her, I mean - how could you not?

She lost her husband on 911 and she's asking, where is the deeper reflection and why are we not more somber?

No doubt, America did the right thing - Obama made the right 'call' but have these so-called "Celebrations" been the respectful response.. the empathetic response for those who lost loved ones that day?
Partying on sacred ground for the death of the one responsible for the death of so many, including her husband - is that sincerity?
God, Himself, said He takes no pleasure in the death of wicked people - Ezekiel 33:11
We can be grateful for the victory - but somber.

So she says....

"Forgive me, but I don't want to watch uncorked champagne spill onto hallowed ground where thousands were murdered in cold blood.

And I don't want to see any ugly blood stained sheets as proof of death or justice.

Nor do I want to think about bullet-ridden corpses being dumped into the sea.

And it breaks my heart to witness young Americans cheer any death -- even the death of a horrible, evil, murderous person -- like it is some raucous tailgate party on a college campus.

Why are we not somber?

Remembering

Accolades to Intel & Seal Team 6 for bringing Osama Bin Laden to justice!

I have visited ground zero a couple of times since 9/11 - sobering!
The grounds there are sacred - forever consecrated and devoted to the families who lost their loved ones and to our country!

On this day, we remember the pain of yesterday but rejoice in the victory of today along with the many families who lost their loved ones in New York, at The Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

This beam was left standing in the rubble of the twin towers. I had heard about the 'World Trade Center Cross' but had to go see it for myself - Breathtaking!

I have no doubt that God had His hands on every person that died that day.
It's an evil, painful world in which we live because it's a 'fallen' world.
God said we would suffer many troubles while here but He also said that He would deliver us from them all. I know in their death and in their suffering, they found life that day.

God Bless America!

A Spiritual Backbone!

I have never used my blog as an avenue to vent anger or frustration but there is something weighing on me, and I just have to lay this burden down.

Where have all the real men gone?

Where are the men with "Spiritual Backbones?" Men like my grandfather, who knew how to take authority over satan and lead his family - not hide behind friends so he could?
Double-minded, weak men with no spiritual spine are just puppets on satan's strings!
Let's hear some teaching on this, "Church!"
Now men have to have accountability partners so they don't cheat on their wife or look at porn on the Internet.
Please, give me a break!
Do you not know that when you stand before God on judgement day, your "accountability partner" will not be there to hold your hand. You will stand alone before an Almighty God and give an account of every action, every word, and every thought you every had.
Go ahead with that lame excuse of 'no one's perfect,' and it's true, no one is - but stop using that for an excuse to fail in your walk with Christ. There was nothing weak or frail about Jesus and He certainly did not need someone to tell Him to 'Just say, No.'
Men, God looks on the heart, therefore He knows your intentions... He knows your misguided mistakes from your calculated sin.
Jesus is returning for a bride that is spotless and without blemish. We are expected, even commanded, to seek after 'righteousness' not 'excuses' for carnality.
Men, stop depending on someone else's faith and lead your family, your church and your life...
Do the world a favor and grow a spiritual backbone!

How Can My Work Serve This World?

As part of the centennial celebration of its founding, Anderson University presented "An Evening With Author Sue Monk Kidd," author of the bestselling novel turned movie, "The Secret Life of Bees." The novel addresses issues concerning race, gender, folklore, religion, and ethics in South Carolina in the 1960’s.
What I recognized about Mrs. Kidd was Southern eloquence at it's best. She was poised, graceful, and sophisticated but demonstrated charm and humility.
She shared her story of growing up idolizing her father and how her love for storytelling developed through the voice of her father and his love for telling stories. She offered us a glimpse into her life as a child growing up in the deep South and the pain she witnessed first hand while growing up in the 60's, a time of racial hatred and disarray. In less than an hour, she had painted us a picture of the warm inviting home in which she grew up, the tragedy of racism she had so often witnessed, and an understanding of who she was as a young writer and the woman she had become through her love for storytelling.
She offered great insight to take away as writers, students, mothers and neighbors but what I walked away with and what I will remember is what she taught me concerning the significance of the value of our work. She explained how she had always been taught to ask the question, "How can this world serve our work," but she came to a place where she understood that we should invert the question to ask, "How can our work serve this world." She explained in a very delicate fashion how fiction, if written with the intentions of enriching the world, has potential to develop empathy within the heart and mind of an individual. She develops her stories and characters in hope they will serve the reader as a compass to finding home. 'Home' being that of self-worth and a love for oneself, life and others. I was inspired by her expression of a vision to better the world through her work; a world absent of hate between men because of their differences, whether it be ethnicity, social status or belief.
I have always favored autobiographic and inspirational works but after absorbing Mrs. Kidd's argument that fiction has the potential to create compassion among a generation, my mind has opened up to much greater possibilities.

So I ask you, "How can your work serve this world?"

A "Red Letter Day" Or Should I Say An "Orange Letter Day" For My Brother!

My brother had the unexpected pleasure of breaking bread with a very special personal icon of his today, Ex-Clemson University Coach, Danny Ford.

He shared with me their conversation about America's favorite pastime - baseball, the coach's love for farm life, and the many years he coached the Clemson Tigers.

This was a blessed happenstance for my brother. He graduated from Clemson many years ago and has loyally lived his life as a 'Diehard' Tiger.

It's certain this day will be duly noted as a "Red Letter Day" or should I say, an "Orange Letter Day for my brother?"

A horse is a vain thing for safety - Even the horse, with all his fleetness, is no sure means of escape from danger: the lion or the tiger can overtake him or he may stumble, fall, and destroy his rider.

Man, as complex a creature as he may be, with the ability to create, invent and aspire is not infallible or incapable of falling short of his promise. But we are a people, especially, if we call ourselves "Christian" with high expectations. What amazes me is why we would expect perfection from our fellow man when we, ourselves, are going to fail on a daily basis. And yes, there are degrees and levels of failure and intentions but we tend to exclude the 'human factor,' especially when that person is in leadership or their name carries a certain title.
The warhorse, though wise through experience and tested by time, is still a horse and to place our complete trust in his reputation of strength and swiftness would be a fallacy at best.

This year's 'Conference for Young (Breast Cancer Survivors) Women' was incredible.

Hundreds of beautiful, courageous young women from all over the world who have faced the painful challenge of breast cancer with determination and grace.

As I listened to some of the stories from the women in their early thirties, I was reminded of the pressures, pains and questions that I, myself, faced at the age of thirty-one and again at the age of thirty-six.

I am thankful I can serve my younger survivor sisters as a mentor, understanding the sensitive issues and adversity the younger generation faces when diagnosed with breast cancer or cancers below the belt.

I was thirty-one when diagnosed with the rare stage 4 vulva cancer and thirty-six when diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.

Vulva cancer has been viewed as a cancer of the elderly woman and breast cancer has always been thought of as a cancer that only older women face. It's not true. Young women do get breast cancer and the issues that the younger woman face are great and sensitive.

The C4YW confronts these issues and I commend them for the openness and honesty of the effects of breast cancer for the younger woman.

That Still Small Voice

While driving to see my oncologist for a 'follow up' visit following the past month of an unexplained crippling episode, which resulted in hospitalization, I suddenly received the answer to a question I'd been desperately seeking from God.

I had asked God several times what all of that was about as I have stood on His healing promises through both cancers and had not understood how I could have become so sick so suddenly when I heard that still small voice saying,
"This is not about you but for My Glory."
I responded with a simple ok.

When we truly give our lives to Christ, they no longer are our own but now belong to our Creator.
We then become a vessel for Him to use for His works and His Glory.
However, we do not have to fear because
"Greater is He that is in us than he that is in this world." 1 John 4:4

Life In A Day

There is a 'lead in' that will explain the film before you watch that I recommend you take the time to check out.

The 24 hour period was on July 24th of 2010 (filmed by regular people during the activities of their day all around the world) but the complete film was shown live streaming last night at the "Sundance Film Festival."
The film will be released later this year so stay tuned but meanwhile, you can watch teasers and footage.

My son and I participated by contributing a portion of our day, mine being the National Dragon Boat Championships in Chattanooga, TN among my fellow breast cancer survivor sisters and his being a trip to the mall with friends preparing to head for Daytona Beach, Florida with his church youth group. Due to thousands of hours of film footage submitted, we did not make in the final film cut but it was awesome to be a part of such an incredible project.

I wanted to share the story behind the picture I entered in the "Breast Investigator's" Contest that you guys are voting for on my behalf. This is an excerpt from the project (solo book) I am currently writing, which is the story of my journey through two stage 4 cancers in my 30's.

My son, Caleb, took this picture the first time I lost my hair in 2004...he had already seen me battle the first cancer in 1998 at the tender age of five years old but the Vulva cancer was not treatable with chemotherapy so when the treatment from the second cancer (breast) in 2003 took my hair, I made the decision that I would offer him my head as a blank canvas to express his feelings towards the events he was now witnessing his mother face. He started out with a simple painting of eyes on the back of my head, joking that he wanted to tell his friends that his mother really did have eyes in the back of her head. Then he asked to photograph me on one of the worst days of my entire life. It was a day that I would challenge God to take me to heaven and end the suffering or grant me one of those TV preacher promises of a 'suddenly' and heal me instantly. My body was racked with greater pain than I knew was even possible. I could hardly lift my head but knew this moment, I could not afford to miss. It was a moment that was an unction from the Holy Spirit, Himself, proclaiming to me that God would use my son to unfold a truth on my behalf if I would dare to allow Him the opportunity. I thought it to be much less than it would become. I lessened it with my human reactions and responses. I imagined it as a tool that would bring my son to more familiarity with the current situation for an end results being that of comfort and less fear. I understand now it would be the chance for me to see myself, Caleb's mom, through his faith-filled eyes, that childlike faith that we as adults have forgotten. I wanted to name the picture, "Being For Real" but he was more than adamant to name the picture, "Light Shining Down On Her." To see myself through the eyes of my ten year old as I was in such a place of despair was a true gift from God. My son saw light shining through the window piercing the top of my hairless head and he interpreted it as hope and courage, strength and the Glory of God. I wanted to expose the pain of a human being's life as they battle cancer but he wanted to reveal the "Giver of Life."

Elizabeth Edwards had the heart of an advocate and I appreciated her voice.
If we don't step up, there will be many more lives ending this way.
As an advocate, myself and a survivor of two different stage 4's, it makes me angry! As a breast cancer sister of Elizabeth's, it makes me sad.
These are the facts:
1) This year, cancer passed heart disease as the leading cause of death in the US.
2) It is estimated that by 2020, one out of two people will be diagnosed sometime in their lifetime.
3) We lose the same amount of people every other day to cancer as we did on 911.
When will congress GET IT???!!!!!!!
I stood on Capital Hill alongside 199 of my Livestrong constituents and we vowed to go to war as Nixon did in 1975 and as we know, no cure.
We have to take the ribbons off! We have to get serious!
My son will not go through what I have been through, I declare it! He will not ever see the trenches of cancer, I decree it!
You may not think you can do anything and you can't do everything but you can do something... and please be careful where you donate your funds.
Be sure your funds go to research, resources and recovery. Don't pad administrator's pockets.
We have to go to the very root of the problem, not scrap the surface.

For weeks, the message of Joshua 5:13 has been pressing in on me....

Not all of the giants in our lives are our enemies.
In fact, I would have to testify that the giants in my life brought me into promise lands I would have never entered into of my own accord.

Joshua was by Jericho when a man stood before him. We have to calculate that this man was that of giant stature because the scripture explains to us that Joshua had to lift up his eyes to look upon him. The giant stood before him with a drawn sword and Joshua, who was use to fighting, asked the giant if he was "Friend" or "Foe". The man's reply to Joshua was that he was the Commander of the army of the Lord. Then the angel proceeded to command Joshua to remove his shoes for he was standing on holy ground.

As children of God, no matter where we are currently standing in life or what the giants may appear to be, we can take our shoes off and feel at home; feel safe. These battles that life has conditioned us to fight belongs to God. The man proclaimed himself to be the Commander of the army of the Lord, which makes the situation clear that we have an army of God at our disposal. He commands His angels to take charge over us and I have watched Him do this in my own life, time after time.. battle after battle.

Most people say after cancer, you have to live the "New Normal" but I say, why would you want "Life as normal" or "Life as usual" after you have experienced this kind of Amazing Grace.

So as you look up at the giants that stand before you in your own life...put away your sword, take off your shoes, and feel at home as these battles belong to the Lord and you're standing on holy ground.

‎"God would rather us think of Him as not able to heal us as oppose to Him not willing." Think of yourself as a parent; wouldn't you?-me

I was recently asked by a fellow cancer fighter why a loving God would allow us to endure cancer. This particular person was angry with God and proclaimed they would never have faith in a God who would be so cruel.
My response: Jesus came to do the 'Will' of His Father and Jesus' ministry was a healing ministry. The Bible clearly tells us that the enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy in John 10:10 and goes on to tell us that Jesus came to bring us life to the fullest. I often hear prayers that ask God if it be His will to heal a particular person than do so.. but I have yet to find anywhere in the Bible that Jesus stopped to ask His Father first if it be His Will before healing someone (the only ones who did not receive their healing were those in Jesus' own hometown and the Bible says it was because of their unbelief. See they had seen Him as merely a carpenter all His life so their perception of Him was not as their healer or savior). The Bible tells us that Jesus went about doing the Will of His Father so you have to look at the ministry of Jesus and what He did go about doing; He went about healing the sick and saving the lost (well the Bible says that same power lives in us). The disciples understood healing but could not understand salvation...today, we understand salvation but not healing. God brought me to studying healing through the two cancers over the past twelve years but it was not until the diagnosis of the second stage 4 that my thinking and my speaking really began to change. I agree, of course, that going home to heaven is the ultimate healing..we are made new and never again will sickness have it's place in our lives but the Bible says we can have these things in the.."Land of the Living."Psalm 23:11 "The power of life and death are in the tongue."Proverbs 18:21 So we have to be careful with what we speak in our situations and how we pray over people..and we have to take the authority given to us through the Holy Spirit and command the mountains to move. Yes, there is an appointed time for all of us to die and leave this place in which we were not created for to begin with but there is a back to the cross..the stripes of Jesus: "By His Stripes, We Were Healed."1 Peter 2:24 There are 39 categories of disease and there were 39 stripes placed upon the back of Jesus? That is powerful! Healing was part of the atonement: His body was broken for our healing and His blood poured out for our salvation.

This is how I know Jesus, as Jehovah Rapha, The God Who Heals. Like salvation, not everyone receives healing but it's not that God's Will has anything to do with it. When Jesus cried out "It is finished," He meant everything. It's up to us to receive..salvation, healing, spiritual gifts. These things will never be forced upon us, they're available for our taken. On the cross, Jesus cried out to God and asked Him why had He forsaken Him.. I believe this to be an indication that God had turned His head as He could not bare to watch the suffering of His son. And even though God is not shocked when things happen to us as the Bible says He knows the end from the beginning...God's heart does break for us when we fall sick or into sin (and I'm not talking about those everyday mess ups that we all have as none of us are ever going to be perfect). I do believe it is His Will for us to be made whole but I think, like Paul talked about, we grow weary in this "race" in the this flesh in this world. My grandmother understood healing as did my aunt, who passed recently from cancer, but both were satisfied with years and both had a greater desire to be with Jesus than to remain here and I truly believe that this is why we do lose some of our loved ones prematurely but I do not believe it was God's Will for them to suffer and die from a disease..(we are conditioned to the things of this world being flesh and bone). I believe when it comes down to it, we make a choice in our spirits (as we are Spirit, Body and Soul). I truly believe that if any of us, living, ever caught a glimpse of heaven and Jesus (and I do believe loved ones we have lost did see Him, I really do....as I could tell you many stories of people on their death bed who cried out His name as if He were in the room) none of us would choose to remain here. I have struggled many times with making the choice of life when my body has been racked with pain beyond explanation from bc bone metz ...and I can't wait to see Jesus face to face; the one who died in my place. I keep choosing life for now, because of my son but one day, I am going to go home! However, cancer will never get the credit and God will never be the blame for my leaving this earth!
I will not die until I am satisfied and I say this with boldness because of Psalm 91:16 "With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."
I just want us to seek out what God really does say about healing and look closer at the ministry of Jesus. Salvation is only the beginning.... He has so much available for us but our heads are so wrapped around this world and what we can see that we so often miss the gifts He has for us. I want what Jesus suffered and died to give me so that it would not have been in vain. I want to pay my vows to Christ and pick up my cross daily and though, I fail often, I know He will give me what I seek in my heart to receive. (Psalm 37:4) I want everyone to know Jesus to be real and to know Him as the one who accomplished everything we would ever need to overcome this world. (John 16:33) If we are praying God's Will be done then we haven't read the Word of God because the Word of God tells us what His Will is, in all things. We need to know this and we need to pray His Word not what we grew up hearing in church.

Story goes: Churchill said this on October 29, 1941, when he visited Harrow School. It was after the Blitz and things were looking up a bit for Britain.

The Cool Scars

Could we take the approach this courageous feline did in the face of such a threat?

This video (link below) reminds me of a story I often share with survivor groups.

One sunny Florida day in the summer, a little boy was viciously attacked by an alligator.
His father saw what was happening from their home window and ran courageously out to his son without hesitation while boldly assuring his boy that he would be alright. The boy's father grabbed his son's arms with a firm determined grip and began to pull him from the alligator's mouth.
The next day when the press requested to interview the small boy about his terrifying experience, he was asked about the ordeal and about the wounds caused by this ferocious animal. Instead of the boy revealing the markings on his legs from the attack of the alligator, he eagerly presented his arms to the reporters. In their confusion, they asked him why he was showing them the bruises on his arms. The little boy peered up to this very attentive group of journalist and explained in a bold proud tone that these were the real scars, the cool scares, because these were the scars where his daddy had held him so tight that it saved his life.

This boy was not concerned with the damage that was now so clearly present from the attack of the alligator or with what he had lost. He was focused on the cool scars that was the evidence of his father's strong hands that had surely saved his life.

This story reminds me of the giants I have faced in my own life. I have scars from over a dozen surgeries and over fifty rounds of radiation and chemotherapy but when I look at myself in the mirror, I only see the scaring from the grip of my heavenly father's hands that has 'surely, saved my life!'

This cat never stopped to think about the possible outcome from his approach to such a giant. Without wavering, he claimed what was his. He stood up to his enemy even after his enemy had multiplied. He had not seen what the outcome would be and it could have went very differently. It was his bold move of faith that caused him to be victorious.

These posters were a series designed by an unknown artist that would serve as a message from the King to his people, who the government was sure had grown discouraged and was losing confidence during the beginning of World War II in 1939.The messages were intended to be used only if the Nazis succeeded in invading Britain.

“Stop Counting the Moments and Start Making the Moments Count”

When my 17 year old son’s alarm clock failed to go off one morning, he said to me, “I’ll never make it, I don’t have enough time.” I replied with “Be thankful you have the time you do,” as the problem was not the lack of time but the importance of how he spent every moment of the time he had.

A moment is defined as a specific point in time. A moment is the only promise that time can afford us with great value in every single one.

Before surviving two different stage 4 cancers while only in my 30’s, I didn’t really understand the cost of a moment. Like everyone else, I would find myself counting down the days and hours to the weekend and then asking, “Where does the time go?” I learned to stop counting the moments and start making the moments count. Time is the precious commodity in which none of us will ever have enough. Time “really doesn’t” wait for anyone.

As romanticized as “The Bucket List” has become, and as glamorous as our goals and achievements on that list are, we should first learn to appreciate and understand that living resides in the day to day details. It’s not “5 Year Plans,” it is spontaneous trips with family and belly laughs with friends. Scripture tells us in Luke 19:13 that we’re to occupy while living. In order to occupy, we have to engage and absorb the present even in a time of trial and testing.

My time of testing began in 1998 at the age of 31 when I was diagnosed with a rare stage 4 vaginal cancer. I underwent a Radical Vulvectomy followed by 28 treatments of radiation to the pelvis, ending all possibilities of more children. Just at five years clear from that cancer, I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, “Invasive Ductal Cell Carcinoma,” that had metastasized to the bones. I underwent a mastectomy and received the normal protocol of radiation, chemotherapy, and bone strengthener. The final report in June 2004 stated "Healing and Response to Therapy,” which I was told is very rarely stated in reports of this kind. I was then placed on an anti-hormone since the cancer had been estrogen driven. In December 2008, with tumor markers rising, I returned to chemotherapy and completed 36 treatments in eight months. Markers returned to normal, chemotherapy was terminated, and I was again placed on a protocol of bone strengthener and an anti-hormone medication. Then in April of this year, tumor markers were again climbing. I decided to seek out additional answers at MD Anderson in Houston, TX and consult with a new oncologist here at home. I was prescribed Xeloda, a chemo pill, along with bone strengthener. Tumor markers are plunging and once they stabilize, I will maintain the bone strengthener and begin a new anti-hormone therapy.

I engaged myself during my time of testing by serving as The Relay for Life’s Entertainment Chair, a Committee Member for the 2008 Cancer Survivor Alliance Conference Committee in Columbia, by raising funds, and by volunteering with various other organizations in the community. I became a cancer advocate with The Lance Armstrong Foundation in 2007 when I was chosen by the foundation to travel with Lance Armstrong and 199 of my constituents from around the country to Washington, DC to ask Congress to make cancer a national priority. In 2008, the foundation asked me to lead a local Livestrong grassroots effort, and I formed Livestrong Upstate SC. I also served as a Track Leader for the foundation at the Livestrong Summit in Columbus, Ohio in 2008. Livestrong Upstate SC has held Livestrong Day events annually throughout the Upstate for “Livestrong Day” and served various cancer organizations with fundraising and community events. Under the Livestrong Upstate name, I birthed the Upstate’s first cancer survivor dragon boat support group that now benefits one of the local cancer associations.

As breast cancer survivor dragon boaters from across the US, we share our journey of survival and our love for the sport of dragon boating in a new book, “Reaching for Life.” The book was formally launched on July 25, 2010 at the USDBF Club Crew Championships held in Chattanooga, TN. First print sold out within three weeks and went to a second print. The Library of Congress has issued the book an ISSN number. Proceeds from the sales will benefit dragon boating activities all over the country.

I was introduced to dragon boating several years ago while recovering from the first cancer diagnosis, which at the time, did not qualify me since the sport was being directed towards breast cancer survivors to reduce the risk of Lymphadema and reoccurrence. I was reintroduced to it in Washington, DC in 2007 a few years after the breast cancer diagnosis. While having lunch with the South Carolina constituents, I met a breast cancer survivor dragon boater who paddled with the Charleston Dragon Boat Team. From that moment, dragon boating became an untamable passion for me. I have paddled with teams throughout the Southeast and Canada, much of the time while undergoing chemotherapy and it was empowering. With every stroke of the paddle, I was fighting back. Outside of the physical and mental benefits of the sport, every aspect from the reach of the paddle to the pull of the water and the tenacity required to cross the finish line is a parallel resemblance against the fight on cancer. Dragon boaters use the reference, “Awakening the Dragon,” which not only defines a new found love for the sport but a sudden explosive passion for life. I was honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to share my journey through these cancers and my love for the sport along side of such courageous women who have perseverance and passion.

Passion is the prerequisite for living and the only means by which we can make the moments of our day to day lives count, no matter the circumstances.

I have seen the sun stand still in the dark places of my life as I've battled a couple of hateful cancers and even before. I have felt the power of the prayers of my friends, family and even strangers. God has shown Himself strong in my life and has been that friend that sticks closer than a brother. He has held my hand through dozens of surgeries, sat with me through over fifty rounds of chemotherapy, comforted me, held me, lifted up my head to see His Glory, favored me, and showered me with His amazing Grace. He is the One Who has carried me when I could not stand and I have felt the warmth of His eyes as He has watched over me.

He is the Love of my life. He is the One Who's breath causes me to be victorious. He has never asked me to be perfect and never expects me to give anything that He, Himself, does not supply. He loved me and protected me even through times when He was the last thing on my mind. He has never lied to me and never turned His back on me. He has only given to me good things.

What kind of love is this, I ask?
This love is unconditional, unmerited, not earned and not jealous. This love is a greater love than we would ever be capable of comprehending. This love is unimaginable and unbelievable. This love is greater than the love for a child or spouse. This love is complete and without boundaries. And no matter what we do, this love is offered freely with no prejudice and no judgement.
This love is our very life.

We remember!

I have visited ground zero with my family a couple of times since 9/11 and it is sacred.

It is forever consecrated and devoted to these families and our country!

I am thankful to live in a country where people will never forget the pains of their neighbors but will always offer hope and healing, peace and goodwill.

Today, we offer our hearts to New York, The Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania as they remember.

We cannot continue to wrap this disease up in pink, purple and yellow ribbons, planning fundraisers and events! I, as a multiple survivor of two different stage 4 cancers feel the obligation and responsibility to take a stand for my son, husband, family and friends.

Livestrong Day, “The Carolinas Care” Event

On LIVESTRONG Day, October 2, 2010, Livestrong Groups from SC will meet up with Livestrong Groups from NC at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC for a day of demonstrating living strong after cancer. Upstate residents are invited to come along with Livestrong Upstate SC for a day of Whitewater Rafting, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Adventure Course, Zip, Mega Jump, Mountain Biking, (Bike Rental included) and much more to celebrate survivorship and proving there is life during and after a cancer diagnosis.

LIVESTRONG Day is the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s (LAF) one-day initiative to unite people affected by cancer in raising awareness of cancer issues in communities across the world. Livestrong North Carolina Leader, Sally Nix and myself as leader of Livestrong Upstate South Carolina decided to unite the Carolinas for this year’s Livestrong Day Event.

Cancer kills more people globally than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined and has been determined this year to be the leading cause of death. Our event is one of 1000 local LIVESTRONG Day events to be held across the world in an effort to build a grassroots movement to drive social change and make cancer a global priority.

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, Livestrong Day will be celebrated at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC. (U.S. National Whitewater Center, 5000 Whitewater Center Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28214) http://www.usnwc.org/ From 10:00am to 5:00pm, at a discounted price of $40, You will have the opportunity to participate in the variety of challenges the Whitewater Center has to offer as often as you would like within the time scheduled for the event. Lunch will not be provided but there is a restaurant and market on the premises with great options.

“Participating in LIVESTRONG Day is important to me as a survivor of two different stage four cancers. I know that we can overcome this disease with a determined attitude, a tenacious mindset”, and unwavering faith. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to support cancer survivors and encourage people in the Upstate of South Carolina to unite together to end the needless death and suffering from the disease that 28 million people are fighting today.”

LIVESTRONG Day 2010 will create a global day of action in the cancer fight one person, one act and one location at a time. October 2, 2010, the anniversary of Lance Armstrong’s cancer diagnosis, represents a day of challenge and hope.

Mayor Roberts and Governor Sanford have provided Livestrong Upstate SC with Proclamations stating October 2, 2010 as Livestrong Day.
